armer, a sandy desert in
Rajasthan has a very special all over print of dark shades of blue and red geometrical
patterns, called ajrakh, printed on both sides, used for turbans and shawls.
Dark
colours are believed to be a protection against the fierce desert sun rays. The Barmer
designs are bold, a popular one being the chirkala booti, the flaming red chilly sharply
emphasised by a deep blue-black outline with trees around loaded with flowers. The designs
and colours represent local tastes and needs; they are in demand all over the country.
