hikankari, which dates back to the Mughal era, is one of the finest types of embroidery.

The motifs are  created  using  white  cotton thread using simple or inverted satin stitch, darn stitch, buttonholing, netting and applique' work. The materials used include calico, muslin, linen and silk which are then converted to a variety of outfits and household items such as bedspreads, table linen, etc. Lucknow is the centre for Chikankari.
