originated in Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh. Firstly the wooden object is engraved or chiselled in a particular
manner, so that when the wire or shaped motifs are beaten in, they
are held down in the groove. Many metals have been used but today it is brass that is
popular. Originally the use of this art was confined to decorate wooden footwear,
traditionally worn in homes, as leather was not considered clean. In recent years, this
technique is being increasingly used for furniture decoration or in panels and pictures
depicting panoramic scenes which can be most attractive.
